Who is James Bond in 007 First Light?

In 007 First Light, James Bond is the playable protagonist — a 26-year-old Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6, years before he is the polished 007 of the films. If you searched “007 First Light James Bond”, that is the short answer: you play a younger Bond who has not yet earned his double-0.

This is an original origin story from IO Interactive, not an adaptation of any existing Bond film. The 007 First Light James Bond is written from scratch as a recruit finding his feet inside the service — talented, cocky, and a long way from the finished agent.

He is played by Patrick Gibson, who provides both the voice and the in-game likeness. We cover Gibson in full lower down; first, here is the Bond you actually control.

From Royal Navy air crewman to 007: Bond's origin

The 007 First Light James Bond starts as a Royal Navy air crewman, not a spy. The campaign is the story of how that recruit earns his 00 status and his licence to kill — the origin the films never showed.

It opens with the Iceland prologue, the mission Against the Odds, where a young Bond is thrown into the deep end. From there the game tracks his recruitment, training and first real assignments for MI6.

Because this is an origin, “earning the 00” is the spine of the whole story rather than a backstory line. For the mission-by-mission route through that journey, see our missions guide.

How old is James Bond, and what year is 007 First Light set in?

The 007 First Light James Bond is 26 years old — the youngest Bond yet depicted, younger than George Lazenby (29) or Sean Connery (32) were when they debuted on film. That youth is the whole point: this is Bond before the legend.

The in-fiction year is less settled. IO Interactive frame it as a modern-feeling origin and draw on Ian Fleming's source material, but published sources do not agree on an exact year or timeline, so we treat any specific date as unconfirmed rather than stating it as fact.

What is solid is the age and the stage of his career: a 26-year-old recruit, pre-007, at the very start of his MI6 life.

This version of Bond: reckless, cocky, and pulled from Fleming

IO describe the 007 First Light James Bond as cocky and insubordinate but effective — a gifted operator who hasn't learned restraint yet. He keeps walking into outnumbered, dangerous situations the seasoned 007 would handle more coolly.

The characterisation leans on Ian Fleming's novels rather than the films — small details, like Bond's cheek scar, come from the books. This is a deliberately literary, slightly rougher Bond.

That rawness is what makes the origin work: you are watching the reflexes and judgement of a future 007 being forged, mistakes and all.

Playing as James Bond: stealth, gunplay, gadgets and the Bluff

Playing the 007 First Light James Bond blends stealth, gunplay, unarmed combat, gadgets and driving. It is built on IO Interactive's Hitman-style systemic design, so most objectives can be approached more than one way — but with far more forward momentum than Hitman.

A signature system is the social-stealth “Bluff”, where Bond talks and blends his way past trouble rather than shooting through it. IO have summed the game up as “not Hitman with James Bond” — the spy-fantasy, not a clone.

For how that playstyle maps across the campaign, our chapters guide breaks the game into its playable sections.

Bond and the MI6 he answers to: M, Q, Moneypenny and Greenway

The 007 First Light James Bond doesn't operate alone. The classic MI6 names return — M, Q and Moneypenny — reintroduced as the people who shape him before he is 007, alongside his mentor, the former 00 John Greenway, and Dr. Selina Tan, who runs his training simulations.

Treating these characters as Bond's formative influences is core to the origin: each one teaches the recruit something on his way to the double-0.

You can read every one of them on the full 007 First Light characters hub.

Who plays James Bond in 007 First Light? Patrick Gibson

James Bond in 007 First Light is played by Patrick Gibson, an Irish actor born in 1995. He provides both Bond's voice and his physical likeness, so the in-game 007 is recognisably him.

Anyone searching “who plays James Bond in 007 First Light” lands here: Gibson is the face and voice of IO Interactive's young Bond, and the casting drew attention well beyond the usual gaming press.

Below is who he is and where you have seen him before.

Who is Patrick Gibson?

Patrick Gibson is an Irish actor, born in 1995. He briefly studied philosophy at Trinity College Dublin before leaving to act full-time, and won the Rising Star award at the 2017 Irish Film and Television Awards.

He has built a screen career across British and US television and film for over a decade — the kind of steady, range-y CV that made him a credible choice to originate a young James Bond.

For 007 First Light, that experience is poured into a single role: the in-game Bond you spend the whole campaign as.

Patrick Gibson's roles: Dexter: Original Sin, Shadow and Bone and The OA

Patrick Gibson's breakthrough was Steve Winchell in Netflix's The OA (2016–2019). He then joined Shadow and Bone as the fan-favourite Nikolai Lantsov (Sturmhond) for its second season in 2023.

Most recently he led Dexter: Original Sin (2024–2025) as a young Dexter Morgan — a high-profile lead that put him on a lot of casting radars right before the Bond reveal. Earlier credits include The Tudors, The White Princess and the film Tolkien.

That mix of prestige TV and a franchise lead is the “where you've seen him” anchor most players bring to the 007 First Light James Bond.

How Patrick Gibson became 007 First Light's James Bond

007 First Light is Patrick Gibson's first video-game role, and the first time he has lent both voice and likeness to a game. He has described his take as a more down-to-earth 007 — fitting for a Bond who hasn't become the icon yet.

It also puts him in franchise history: Gibson is the second Irish actor to play James Bond after Pierce Brosnan, and the first actor to originate Bond's physical likeness for an original video game rather than a film.

Because the in-game model is built on him, the 007 First Light James Bond reads clearly as Gibson the moment he is on screen.

Is Patrick Gibson the next film James Bond? And is there a sequel?

A popular question is whether Patrick Gibson will be the next film James Bond. Honestly: there is no official Eon casting tied to this — the “next Bond” talk is fan and press speculation (outlets like OpenCritic noted the calls). For now, the 007 First Light James Bond is his Bond.

A sequel, though, looks likely. IO Interactive secured the rights to more than one Bond title, leadership has described First Light as “just the beginning”, and the ending teases more — pointing toward a planned trilogy.

We track the ending and the trilogy plans in detail on the sequel page.
