Who is Q in 007 First Light?

In 007 First Light, Q is MI6's quartermaster — the head of Q Branch, the division that designs, builds and signs off every gadget and piece of field tech the young James Bond carries. He is voiced by Alastair Mackenzie. On the big 007 First Light cast lists Q usually gets a single functional line; this dossier goes further, because Q is one of the most-searched names attached to the game and the cast pages barely cover him.

IO Interactive's own developer diary frames this Q less as an eccentric in a lab coat and more as “the professor, the teacher and the mentor”. He commands respect and keeps a glint of humour — “a twinkling of his eye” — but his job is to keep Bond focused on the mission rather than the toys. In a story about a 007 who has not yet earned the number, that mentor role carries real weight.

What sets the 007 First Light version of Q apart is that he is written with field experience of his own. IO describe a man with “a few tasty moves under his belt” — someone who has been out there, not just behind a bench — which makes him a steadying influence on a reckless young Bond. Gadgets, in his hands, are tools to be respected, and he is as much a disciplinarian as he is a friend.

Q in the Bond franchise

If you searched “Q” expecting the man who hands Bond his gadgets, you are right — but it is worth separating franchise context from what 007 First Light specifically confirms. Across sixty years of films, Q (short for Quartermaster) has been a fixture: Desmond Llewelyn defined him over seventeen films, with John Cleese and later Ben Whishaw taking the chair. The name carries an expectation — clever kit, and a dry warning to bring the equipment back in one piece.

007 First Light is an origin story for a young Bond, so the useful question is how its Q sits against that lineage. What IO have confirmed is the role and the characterisation above; they have not framed this as a reboot of any particular film Q. So treat the franchise history as background colour for why a “Q” search matters — and the “Who is Q” section above as what the game itself actually establishes.

Q and Bond's gadgets in 007 First Light

Because Q runs Q Branch, he is the in-fiction source of Bond's gadgets in 007 First Light — the watch, the phone, the pen and the rest are signed out of his department. IO have shown official renders of First Light's gadgets, but the game keeps the definitive loadout for players to discover, so this page will not claim a fixed list. For the kit itself — what each gadget does and where it turns up — we keep a dedicated page.

Q's workspace is referred to as “Q’s Lab” in early coverage; we mark that naming as single-source until a second outlet confirms it. In the screenshots here you can see the kind of MI6 technical workshop that fits a quartermaster's operation — benches, technicians, a vehicle under a rig. It is the visual shorthand for where Bond's equipment comes from.

Is Q younger in 007 First Light?

One detail people ask about is Q's age. Here is the honest version: IO Interactive's developer diary describes him as “a slightly younger man” and a “cool uncle figure”, while at least one guide has instead called him older and more seasoned. Because the published sources do not agree, we do not state Q's age as a fact.

What we can say is what is visible and what IO themselves emphasise. The official character render shows an older man in a white coat with glasses and a cane, and the developer framing leans on experience and mentorship rather than a number. If you want the “is this a young Q” answer, the most accurate one is that IO pitched him as younger-feeling and approachable — a mentor with a twinkle — without nailing an age down on screen.

Alastair Mackenzie: the actor behind Q

Q is voiced by Alastair Mackenzie

Alastair Mackenzie is a Scottish actor whose screen credits include Andor and The Crown, alongside British dramas such as Unforgotten and Professor T. For Mackenzie — like co-stars Patrick Gibson (Bond) and Kiera Lester (Moneypenny) — 007 First Light is among his first video-game roles, part of the fresh acting talent IO Interactive brought to the project rather than a veteran of the game voice booth.
