In 007 First Light, Q is MI6's quartermaster — the head of Q Branch, the division that designs, builds and signs off every gadget and piece of field tech the young James Bond carries. He is voiced by Alastair Mackenzie. On the big 007 First Light cast lists Q usually gets a single functional line; this dossier goes further, because Q is one of the most-searched names attached to the game and the cast pages barely cover him.

IO Interactive's own developer diary frames this Q less as an eccentric in a lab coat and more as “the professor, the teacher and the mentor”. He commands respect and keeps a glint of humour — “a twinkling of his eye” — but his job is to keep Bond focused on the mission rather than the toys. In a story about a 007 who has not yet earned the number, that mentor role carries real weight.

What sets the 007 First Light version of Q apart is that he is written with field experience of his own. IO describe a man with “a few tasty moves under his belt” — someone who has been out there, not just behind a bench — which makes him a steadying influence on a reckless young Bond. Gadgets, in his hands, are tools to be respected, and he is as much a disciplinarian as he is a friend.

If you searched “Q” expecting the man who hands Bond his gadgets, you are right — but it is worth separating franchise context from what 007 First Light specifically confirms. Across sixty years of films, Q (short for Quartermaster) has been a fixture: Desmond Llewelyn defined him over seventeen films, with John Cleese and later Ben Whishaw taking the chair. The name carries an expectation — clever kit, and a dry warning to bring the equipment back in one piece.

007 First Light is an origin story for a young Bond, so the useful question is how its Q sits against that lineage. What IO have confirmed is the role and the characterisation above; they have not framed this as a reboot of any particular film Q. So treat the franchise history as background colour for why a “Q” search matters — and the “Who is Q” section above as what the game itself actually establishes.

Because Q runs Q Branch, he is the in-fiction source of Bond's gadgets in 007 First Light — the watch, the phone, the pen and the rest are signed out of his department.
